Imagine knowing when corrosion starts

KE-chain is already successfully used for visual inspections and registrations in, among other things, the wet infrastructure. We are always looking for opportunities to give our customers even better insight into the quality. That is why we have developed a solution together with C-Cube International to predict corrosion maintenance based on sensor measurements and visual inspections. The solution has already been successfully applied at Sluis Eefde and is being launched by C-Cube during the KE-chain event.

Of corrective maintenance

Rust or corrosion occurs in wet infrastructure such as bridges, locks and windmills. Corrosion of the construction affects the service life. In order not to endanger the construction, it must be addressed in time. Today the normal procedure is to visually inspect corrosion. This method assumes that there is already corrosion. With the current inspection method, you are therefore always too late.

A costly affair, knows Guus Coolegem, director of C-cube. Restoring the underlying construction and applying a new protective layer is already expensive. In addition, there is the restriction of the availability of the asset. An impact that is often equal to or greater than the costs for the repair work.

During the pilot within Sluis Eefde, a great risk emerged. With visual inspections, we actually do not know what the quality of the construction is. This is a risk that is transferred to Rijkswaterstaat during the change of management from, for example, a contractor. Or, as a contractor put it sharply: “It may well be that the previous owner has updated some rust spots with a spray can of the Action. We can not determine that.”

To predictable maintenance

These are two good reasons for measuring corrosion in a different way. That is exactly what C-Cube does; measuring corrosion with sensors. C-Cube international is the specialist in corrosion and works worldwide to help customers with the most annoying corrosion problems. The best and cheapest method remains to stay ahead of these problems. To this end, C-Cube called in the help of KE-works to translate the knowledge and expertise of C-Cube’s corrosion into an online service; the ‘predictive corrosion service’. Imagine that you can see in advance in a dashboard when corrosion will occur. That would make it possible to;

  • Prevent damage from corrosion

  • Provide insight into the quality of the construction

The first application of the service has now been successfully tested within the Sluis Eefde project of Rijkswaterstaat and TBI Mobilis. Based on the pilot, cost savings of around 40% on corrosion maintenance appear feasible. Roughly half of the savings consist of lower maintenance costs and the other half of higher availability.
